Portraits & Poems — Take Your Pick

BUT YOU ARE YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL or  I DARE SAY MOST SEABIRDS DIE AT SEA AND THEIR WEIGHTLESS BONES ARE PULVERISED BY THE WATER OR THE WIND

Tiles white,

fingers sticky,

fish eggs in the porcelain bowl.

Orange orbs, blue water,

fish eggs in the porcelain bowl.

I hold my breath,

face like an orchid.

Hover, sweaty,

porcelain bowl.

Rotten teeth and whitening strips,

I’d say surplus is immoral.

The mirror shatters at

the makeup counter

and I foam at the mouth.

Fish eggs in the porcelain bowl.

Paper doll with shaking thighs,

with dirt under manicured nail.

Saying delicious delicious delicious.

Porcelain bowl.

Milk, cream, plate full of jelly,

grinning at my work.

Chicken soup, sponge cake, cigarette,

All back in the porcelain bowl.

It feels like archaeology,

all this uncovering bone.
